How To Hang a Tv on a Wall
To have your flat screen Tv mounted on a wall is becoming more and more popular. Gone are the old days when the television took up the whole corner of the room. Together with a stand, the tv set up could take up quite a bit of room. Nowadays the Tv can be wall mounted on a bracket, this frees up floor space which would normally be taken up with the television stand.
When considering hanging a Tv on the wall, there should be a few factors to consider.
Is the wall onto which the Tv is going to be mounted a solid brick wall or a stud partition wall? The reason you need to know is that there are certain types of brackets which you shouldn't put on a stud wall. Also, there are specialist kinds of wall plugs for stud walls and these always need to be used when attaching a Tv bracket. With partition walls, it is advisable to only use a flat or flat & tilt bracket. Why? well, with a bracket that has a cantilever arm (where the Tv is fixed to an outstretched arm) this puts far too much weight on the plasterboard wall and can cause either the plugs to be pulled out from their fixings or to pull a chunk of the plasterboard wall out altogether.
Where is the power socket or wall socket for the Tv to be plugged into? It may be the case that you would need to call in a qualified electrician to install some new power sockets near to where you are going to have you Tv wall Mounted, that or you'll need to extend the power lead for the television.
Where is your Freeview, Freesat BT Vision, Virgin or Sky receiver going to be situated? and will the HDMI Cables be able to reach from there to the back of the Tv? So many times we will get to a customers home and at the point of installing the Tv on the wall, they suddenly realize hat they have neglected to consider this issue.
Another important point is to consider when sat down, how high you'd like you'd Tv to be fixed? If you position the Tv too high, you will likely suffer form watching Tv in an awkward positon, and can cause stiff neck problems. It is better to have the Tv at a reasonable height, a place where you are not likely to get a stiff neck after watching Tv for a few hours!
Finally you will need to consider whether or not you want your cables which will be dropping down from the back of your Tv hidden in the wall or in a length of Trunking? If you want the cables hidden in the wall for instance, then you have to take into account there will be a lot of mess when the channel is created in the wall, and the added expense of having a plasterer to repair this channeling, and finally redecorate. If you are not willing to go through this then the only other option is to have trunking installed to hide away your unsightly cables.
Once you have found the answers to these questions, then you will have already saved yourself a lot of time rectifying these problems after the fact. You will need either a drill or a SDS drill (hammer drill) coach bolts plugs, a level, measuring tape and a ratchet for tightening the bolts.
